What is Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film?
Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film is an incredible transparent (clear) polyurethane film that adheres to the painted surface of vulnerable areas on your vehicle. This rugged urethane film is 8-mil thick (.008”) and it helps to protect against stone chips, bug damage, abrasion, and weathering. The film maintains the beauty and integrity of automotive finishes on defenseless exterior painted surfaces such as the front bumper, hood, leading hood edges, side mirrors and rocker panels. The film is resistant to: punctures & tearing, most solvents, fuel & oil spray, temperatures up to 160°F, and moisture.
Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film is transparent and nearly invisible, and it does not alter vehicle appearance or aerodynamics. The skintight fit of the product does not at all detract from the original appearance of your vehicle. Many new high-end vehicles (Porsche, Mercedes, Ferrari, etc) come with this product installed straight from the factory.
What area of my car will be covered?
Every year, make, and model are different. Generally the front part of the hood, fenders, side mirrors, and front bumper are included, as those are the areas that are most prone to take damage from the rock chips, bugs, etc. You can also do the headlights & foglights, rocker panels, wheel flares, door handles, and door edge guards. All patterns are professionally designed based on each year, make, and model. You can let us know what areas are most concerning for you and we can apply it to whatever surfaces that you like.
How hard is it to see on the car after it is applied?
The material is over 95% clear. On any color that is darker than stark white, you can’t see the film from a few feet away. On a stark white car, you can see that 5% of color, but it is still invisible from a short distance.
Will the product fit my car perfectly, edge to edge?
Yes, it will because the film is cut to the exact specifications of your year/model vehicle. Our highly skilled certified installers apply the film around compound curves, challenging grillwork, wheel openings, bumpers, and all other areas on today’s vehicles. The analogy that is most commonly used in talking about applying this material to a contoured surface is: “Imagine gift wrapping a basketball, and all of the wrinkles that you would have in the wrapping paper. Not much you can do about it, right? Now imagine wrapping the same basketball in Saran Wrap instead. Stretching the Saran Wrap allows it to take the shape of what you are stretching it over.”
Does Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film resist yellowing?
Yes, it does resist yellowing because the film is constructed of thermoplastic urethane, a tough, conformable material that is covered by a clear coat layer. The film and its clear coat layers contain UV protectants to counteract harmful ultraviolet rays that can cause yellowing.
Once on the vehicle, will the film shrink or expand due to temperature fluctuations?
No. Its shrinkage is rated at less than 0.1%.
How is Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film maintained? Can I use wax over the film?
No special maintenance is required with this film. You can (and should) wash and wax your car just like you normally would. The film’s top layer is a clear coat just like your vehicle’s paint job has, therefore it will respond to waxes in the same way the paint does, which means the film will sparkle just as much as the paint will after washing and waxing. The film is clear so you will not even see it on the car and the vehicles paint sparkles as if there was no film on it protecting its surface.
***The only thing you can’t use on the film are buffing machines, rubbing compounds, and/or abrasive polishes.
Will Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film harm the painted surface if the film is removed?
No, of course not! This product is designed to help protect your paint, not damage it. If the film is professionally applied, it can be removed without damaging paint surfaces beneath the film.
How is Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film removed?
If you are looking to have it removed, we STRONGLY RECOMMEND that you have us or another professional do the removal. We remove the film by picking up a corner and pulling the film off of the vehicle’s surface from a 30 to 90-degree angle. If the film has been present for a long time, or if the film and vehicle are cold, a heat gun may be used to soften the adhesive, allowing for an easier removal. We then use our adhesive removal products to clean off and left over adhesive.
How can I justify the cost of putting Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film on my vehicle?
Simply put, it saves the painted surface of your vehicle. A new paint job and/or body work will cost much more in the long run. This allows your vehicle to stay in prime condition for every day that you have it as well as when you go to sell it.
Can Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film be applied over a vehicle that has had the paint touched up?
We recommend that any repainted surfaces on your vehicle be professionally painted and fully cured before applying paint protection film. If you have touched up scratches or chips with a tube of “touch-up” paint and then apply paint protection film over it, the film will protect that area until it is removed, however if the paint protection film is removed, it is possible that the area around the non-professional touch-up paint could peel off.
Be AWARE of CHEAPER BRANDS-------------There is one and ONLY 3M Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film. There are cheaper alternatives out there, however, like with anything, you get what you pay for. The 3M product that we install is simply the best available product in the marketplace with regards to looks, durability, and overall effectiveness.
What is the Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film warranty?
The manufacturer of the film, 3M, warrants that Scotchgard™ Paint Protection, installed after November 1, 2003, will be free of defects in materials and manufacture------including yellowing, bubbling or cracking, -- for five (5) years from the date of purchase. This warranty does not apply to damage caused by misuse, accident, misapplication, or ordinary wear, nor does it apply to dents caused by physical impact of rocks or road debris.
